ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBSDC) ? Maryland Gov. Martin O?Malley has made his gambling expansion bill proposal and internet gambling was not a part of it.
House speaker Michael Busch says there is currently just not enough information available on casino operated internet gambling at the moment to include it as a part of the bill discussion or special session set to begin Thursday.
It certainly doesn?t help that the Senate committee in charge of gambling expansion isn?t showing much support of internet gambling either.
Internet gambling, once widely regarded as the ?Wild West? was finally harnessed in 2011 when three of the largest online poker sites were overrun by the FBI and shut down.
The FBI wrangled Full Tilt Poker, Poker Stars and Absolute Poker, freezing all their assets and charging the owners with bank fraud and money laundering. Many users of the three sites were irate when they visited the site, only to find a warning message on the homepage explaining the domain name had been seized by the FBI and they could no longer access their accounts. Some users lost thousands of dollars.
The head of the Maryland state Lottery says if lawmakers ever approved internet gambling, the agency does have the capability to implement it.
The issue came up last week when the developer of Maryland Live casino said he?d be less likely to oppose building a casino in Prince George?s County if Maryland lawmakers approved online gambling in the state.
