You can?t call yourself a guitarist if you don?t know how to strum your instrument correctly. Learning to strum the guitar properly is one of the toughest parts in the learning curve. When you strum the guitar you are doing a downstroke and upstroke in numerous movements. You want to make sure you count each beat and off beat so you know when to perform an upstroke or downstroke. One thing you don?t want to do is strum some strings a little harder than the other ones. You don?t want to begin too quickly and then slow down as you get to the final few strings.
