High school football: Berrien learning under fire

Berrien Springs is changing conferences and changing offenses.

The Shamrocks will join the Wolverine Conference this fall, a league that Berrien coach Bill Bergan calls ?tough and brutal.?

?We open with Allegan, who has the second fastest guy in the state (Gary Jones) and then we play Paw Paw, Otsego and Dowagiac. The film exchange in the conference is organized. It will make game plans easier. But the other teams are not hiding as many people as we?re hiding. We?re going to have to pick up this offense under fire.?

That offense is the double wing, which Bergan is switching to from the spread.

?We couldn?t get the spread to work in the lower levels,? he said. ?So every year on the varsity we were having to teach a brand new offense. This will help us get some consistency through the ranks.?

Vince Rago, last year?s junior varsity quarterback, takes over on the varsity.

?We?re just asking him to manage games,? Bergan said.

Matt Rudlaff (6-0, 180) is moving from center to fullback and Chris and Brandon Rodgers are back at wingbacks. Nick Padla (6-5, 260) will anchor the line.

Defense is going to have to carry the Shamrocks. Returning are tackle Jeremy Dinges (6-3, 320), ends Padla, and Jhon Williams (6-5, 235), linebackers Rudlaff, Josh Jorgensen and Anthony Broyles and the Rodgers? in the secondary.

Coloma enters the Wolverine, coming off back-to-back 1-8 campaigns.

The Comets have quarterback Andrew Steinhoff (6-3, 190) and wide receiver Matt Greco leading the offensive returnees. Linebacker Shane Wright, the team?s top tackler last year, is back on defense.

Red Arrow

For two years in a row New Buffalo has won five of its first seven games. And two years in a row the Bison finished the season with losses to Bridgman and Lake Michigan Catholic to miss the state playoffs.

This year?s New Buffalo team may be ready to take that next step.

The Bison have plenty of skill players back in quarterback Aaron Buckner (6-1, 220), halfbacks Kyle (6-3, 230) and Kevin Levine (6-1, 225) and fullback John Tarnowski (5-9, 185). Buckner threw for more than 800 yards and ran for more than 400 last year. Kevin Levine rushed for over 800.

Add to that the fact that New Buffalo welcomes back guards Ryan Ziarko (6-1, 240) and Richie Nekvasil (6-3, 240) and center Noah Bussa (6-3, 250) up front.

Two-time defending champ Lake Michigan Catholic is led by 12 returning seniors, including third-year linebacker-running back Jack Hardman and fourth-year center Devin Gallagher. Jimmy McQuillian returns at quarterback and Tyler Schultz is back at middle linebacker.

Eau Claire has just 17 players and four of those will miss the season opener because of academic problems.

The Beavers do have fourth-year quarterback Carston Harner (6-1, 170) and fullback Sergio Delgado (5-9, 180) returning. Delgado rushed for over 700 yards last year.
