HOME IMPROVEMENT ? Six Simple Fix-ups For Your Home

?

Maintaining your home is necessary to retain its value and comfort. Improving your home is taking the maintenance a step further to increase the value, and create a more livable space for your and your family. This article outlines six simple ways to make those additional improvements.

?

The interior living space of your home is where most of your time is spent, and there are easy changes you can make to increase its comfort and beauty. Assuming the basics of your home are adequate, you can update the look of any room by adding new furnishings or replacing the window treatments. A new area rug and accessories like lamps, cushions and wall decor can create a totally new look.

?

If your basement has enough space, you can create additional living space for the enjoyment of your family. A play area for small children, or a family room can be a valuable addition. You might even create an extra bedroom for guests and a bathroom, if there is available plumbing. Make sure there is at least access to a window escape in case of fire, as this is required by building codes.

?

Put a pretty face on your home by updating the landscaping your yard. The first step in this process is making a plan, using shrubs and plants that grow in your area. Check with your local greenhouse if you do not feel you have the ability to draw up a good plan yourself. They can refer you to a landscaping company that will help you with the plan, and the work if you cannot do the work yourself.

?

One of the best ways to add value to your home is by updating the kitchen or adding a bathroom. Your home may have enough bathrooms already, but you can still gain value by updating the ones you have. Since these areas are relatively small, the amount of work required is less than some other areas of the home. New counter tops and updated cabinets in either the kitchen or the bath is relatively easy, and gives a new and modern look to room which may have been previously uninspiring.

?

Even though making sure the insulation and furnace in a home is working properly is technically part of maintenance, updating either can add value. Most home buyers look for a home which is energy efficient, and whether or not you are planning to sell your energy costs will be less while you live there.

?

Replacing old and worn carpet with hardwood or laminate flooring can make a great positive impact on the value of your home. Replacing the flooring is not difficult, but you may need some help if you are not experienced at construction. Even if you need to hire someone to either help you or do the job for you, the return on your investment makes the project worthwhile.

?

Making sure your home retains its value is the purpose of regular maintenance, but increasing the value may require some updating. Use some or all of the ideas in this article to make sure to keep your home at its highest potential value.
