Could blueberry state Maine be a slice of Romney's presidential pie?

(Reuters) - Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are scouting an unlikely path to the White House through the vast forests and blueberry barrens of northern Maine.

President Barack Obama is expected to win the Pine Tree State easily in the November 6 election.

Regardless, Romney allies are buying TV time with the hope of carrying the state's thinly populated interior and scraping out one electoral college vote in Maine that could edge their man closer to the 270 needed to win the White House.

With polls showing a dead heat nationally, Republicans in the state are focusing their phone calls and door-knocking efforts on the rural north of Maine -- one of two states that play by a different set of rules in presidential elections.

Most states give all of their electoral votes to the winner, but Maine and Nebraska award one electoral vote to the winners of each of their congressional districts, two in Maine and three in Nebraska.

The candidate who takes the statewide vote -- very likely to be Obama in Maine -- receives an additional two electoral votes, meaning there are a total of four up for grabs in Maine.

Although winning just one electoral vote in northern Maine is still a longshot, Maine Republicans are optimistic about Romney's chances. They point to a private poll that found Romney leading Obama by 5 percentage points in the northern part of the state earlier this month, even though he trailed Obama in the state as a whole.

Mark Brewer, a political science professor at the University of Maine, said it was possible, if not likely, that Romney could win half the state.

"There's not a lot going on on the ground that would lead you to believe he could do this," Brewer said. "But who knows? Polling is pretty sparse up here."

Republicans certainly think it's possible. "I think it's very likely that he'll win," said David Sorensen, a spokesman for the state Republican party.

The odds seem stacked against Romney, though. Maine has never split its electoral votes and it hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. A series of polls in September showed Obama leading Romney by double-digit margins statewide.

A bruising, months-long battle within the state party between Romney supporters and backers of libertarian-leaning candidate Ron Paul has also prompted many Republican activists to stay on the sidelines this fall.

"I think Romney will do well, but if they had welcomed the Ron Paul people instead of alienating them like they did it would probably be a sure thing," said Republican activist Chris Dixon, a Paul supporter.

TWO MAINES

While aides highlight efforts to expand the race into states once thought safe for Obama, like Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Maine hasn't really been on the Romney campaign's radar so far.

Romney himself owns a home in neighboring New Hampshire, and his campaign is based in Boston, an hour's drive from the Maine border. But he hasn't visited the state since last winter.

The election highlights the gulf between what residents call the "Two Maines" -- the relatively affluent southern coast and the rest of the state, where opportunities have dwindled amid cutbacks in logging, potato farming and fish canning.

Regional disparities like this normally do not matter in the context of presidential politics because most states award their electoral votes on an all-or-nothing basis.

Obama picked up an additional electoral vote this way in 2008 when he won one congressional district in Nebraska.

Nebraska is not expected to split its votes this year, but Romney's allies seem to like the odds in Maine.

Restore Our Future, an outside group supporting the former Massachusetts governor, spent $300,000 on television advertising in the northern half of the state last week, and plans to spend $490,000 across the state in the final week before the election.

The ads running in the Portland television market reach voters in New Hampshire, but those running in Bangor and Presque Isle are aimed squarely at voters in Maine's second congressional district, which encompasses the state's less affluent half.

Maine Republicans say they are focusing their get-out-the-vote efforts on the second district, and they hope the burst of energy can help them unseat Michael Michaud, the Democrat who represents the region in Congress.

Democrats scoff at this, pointing to their own private polling that shows Obama and Michaud leading handily. The Romney campaign would have a more visible presence in the state if they thought they had a chance, they say.

"We don't see any evidence that this Romney 'head fake' has any basis in reality," said Ben Grant, the state Democratic Party chairman.

Romney more likely to break political gridlock, poll says | NOLA.com

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shakes hands with supporters during a campaign stop at the University of Miami on Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla. A recent poll found more voters trust Romney, over President Barack Obama, to break the political gridlock in Washington. (Photo by AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

WASHINGTON -- Just about everybody agrees Washington is a gridlocked mess. But who's the man to fix it? After two years of brawling and brinkmanship between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, more voters trust Mitt Romney to break the stalemate, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

Romney's message -- a vote for Obama is a vote for more gridlock -- seems to be getting through. Almost half of likely voters, 47 percent, think the Republican challenger would be better at ending the logjam, compared with 37 percent for Obama.

With the race charging into its final week, Romney is pushing that idea. He increasingly portrays himself as a get-things-done, work-with-everybody pragmatist, in hopes of convincing independent voters that he can overcome Washington's bitter partisanship. The AP-GfK poll shows the race in a virtual dead heat, with Romney at 47 percent to Obama's 45 percent, a difference within the margin of sampling error.

At a rally Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla., Romney recounted how he worked with the Democratic-led Legislature as governor of Massachusetts and insisted he would find common ground with Democrats in Washington, too: "We can't change course in America if we keep attacking each other. We've got to come together and get America on track again."

Obama made his own show of bipartisanship Wednesday, touring superstorm Sandy devastation alongside Republican Gov. Chris Christie in New Jersey. A major Romney supporter, Christie has been praising Obama's "outstanding" response to the natural disaster.

Obama counters the Washington gridlock question by predicting that Republican lawmakers focused on opposing his re-election will become more cooperative once he wins a second term and becomes ineligible to run again. Referring to the top Republicans in Congress, Obama joked he would "wash John Boehner's car" or "walk Mitch McConnell's dog" to help get a federal deficit-cutting deal.

Obama also argues that Romney is more conservative these days than when he was elected governor and will find his newer ideas don't go down easily with Senate Democrats. For example, Romney, who worked with legislators to pass a health care overhaul in Massachusetts, has vowed to repeal the Democrats' similar national health care law.

In the AP-GfK poll, about 1 out of 6 likely voters didn't take a side on the gridlock issue: 6 percent weren't sure who would do a better job at getting Washington moving and 10 percent didn't trust either man to break the impasse among congressional partisans.

"They all need to be taken by the ear by a grandma," voter Margaret Delaney, 65, said in frustration.

She lives in Janesville, Wis., the hometown of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, and she's leaning toward voting for the GOP ticket. But when it comes to ending gridlock, Delaney thinks it may not matter whether Romney or Obama is president.

"I'm not sure either of them can do it," she said.

A political standoff last year came close to forcing the government to default on its bills and led Standard & Poor's to downgrade the United States' credit rating. Over the past two years, a Congress split between Republican and Democratic leadership posted one of the least productive sessions in history.

When lawmakers return after Election Day for a lame-duck session, they need to work together with Obama to solve some festering troubles, including the "fiscal cliff" -- a looming combination of higher taxes and spending cuts that could trigger another recession if Congress doesn't find a resolution.

If re-elected, Obama will almost certainly face another two years or more of divided government. Polling in the states suggests Republicans are likely to keep the control of the U.S. House that they won in 2010. And tea partyers who stymied efforts to reach a deficit-reduction deal seem certain to remain a substantial presence.

There's a good chance that a President Romney would face a split Congress, as well. Democrats appear to have an edge in holding onto their Senate majority, especially if the presidential race remains close. At least a dozen of the 33 Senate races remain competitive, making the overall outcome tough to predict.

Obama also likes to remind Democrats and like-minded independent voters that he serves as a check on congressional Republicans. The president suggests Romney would be unwilling to stand up to "the more extreme parts of his party."

Leigh Westholm of Pensacola, Fla., said that's why she supports Obama's re-election even though she doesn't think he will be able to make peace with House Republicans.

"It takes two to tango and he has tried and tried for four years," Westholm said. "It might be better for Romney, but I don't agree with his views."

But Romney supporter Gary Bivins, a 57-year-old West Chester, Ohio, retiree volunteering in his first presidential campaign, says don't blame Congress.

A president needs the ability to lead, he said, and "I think Obama has shown no skill in that area."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

Petition seeks regulation on EMF radiation | Vicky Nanjappa

A petition (public interest litigation) seeking a odirective to the government to establish guidelines to safeguard the health of the public from from radiation emitting out of cell phone towers will be heard by the Supreme Court tomorrow.
The petition filed by Prashanth Bhushan seeks a directive to the Department of Telecommunications to establish an independent regulatory body to enforce the present safety norms regulating the EMF radiation from base transmitting stations and to heighten the present norms.
The petition seeks enforcement of the current EMF radiation safety norms by abolishing self-regulation and establishing an independent Regulatory Authority to decide EMF radiation safety levels and to monitor and enforce its implementation; tightening the norms as per Precautionary Principle in order to bring them in line with the safety norms followed by other countries and proposed by independent scientific studies; making environmental impact assessments mandatory prior to installation of cell phone towers and banning installation of phone masts in highly populated areas, protected natural areas and in places where endangered species exist.
The petition states that Cell phone technology has revolutionized the telecommunication scenario in India. Due to its several advantages, cell phone technology has grown exponentially in the last decade. Currently, there are more than 50 crore cell phone users and nearly 4.4 lakh cell phone towers to meet the communication demand. The numbers of cell phones and cell towers are increasing without giving due care to its disadvantages. All over the world, people have been debating about associated health risk due to radiation from cell phones and cell towers.
A cell phone transmits 1 to 2 Watt of power in the frequency range of 824 ? 849 MHz (CDMA), 890 ? 915 MHz (GSM900) and 1710 ? 1780 MHz (GSM1800). A cell phone has a SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) rating. In USA, SAR limit for cell phones is 1.6W/Kg which is actually for 6 minutes per day usage. It has a safety margin of 3 to 4, so a person should not use cell phone for more than 18 to 24 minutes per day. This information is not commonly known to the people in India, so crores of people use cell phones for more than an hour per day without realizing its associated health hazards.
A base station and its transmitting power are designed in such a way that mobile phone should be able to transmit and receive enough signal for proper communication up to a few kilometers. Majority of these towers are mounted near the residential and office buildings to provide good mobile phone coverage to the users. These cell towers transmit radiation 24?7, so people living within 10?s of meters from the tower will receive 10,000 to 10,000,000 times stronger signal than required for mobile communication. In India, crores of people reside within high radiation zones.
In India, we had adopted radiation norms given by ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) guidelines of 1998 for safe power density of f/200, where frequency (f) is in MHz. Hence, for GSM900 transmitting band (935-960 MHz), power density was 4.7W/m2 and for GSM1800 transmitting band (1810-1880 MHz), it was 9.2W/m2. The Inter Ministerial Committee constituted on 24.08.2010 recommended for lowering the mobile towers? EMF exposure limits to 1/10th of the existing prescribed limit. These new norms came into force on 01.09.2012 but still fall short of solving the problems posed by cell tower radiation.
The ICNIRP guidelines clearly state that for simultaneous exposure to multiple frequency fields, the sum of all the radiation must be taken into consideration. However, in India, we have applied this limit to individual carriers, so the radiation level exceeds by several times than even prescribed by ICNIRP guidelines, depending upon the total number of transmitters in that area Some of the people (especially older people, house wives, small children) living near the towers are exposed to this radiation 24 hours a day.

Strong connection found between death of child and mortality of mother

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? The death of a child is a tragic event for a family, bringing with it feelings of numbness, anger, guilt and denial. And, unfortunately, for many families, the loss becomes too much to bear.

A new study co-conducted by a researcher at Rochester Institute of Technology uncovers the strong connection between the death of a child and the mortality of the mother, regardless of cause of death, gender of the child, marital status, family size, income or education level of the mother.

Javier Espinosa, assistant professor in RIT's College of Liberal Arts and an expert in health and labor economics, compiled results from nine years of research after studying more than 69,000 mothers, ages 20 to 50. According to Espinosa, the impact to mother mortality is strongest in the two years immediately following the child's death. In fact, Espinosa's research suggests that mother mortality increases 133 percent after the death of a child.

"To my knowledge, this is the first study to empirically analyze this issue with a large, nationally represented U.S. data set," Espinosa says. "The evidence of a heightened mortality rate for the mother, particularly in the first two years of the child's passing, is especially relevant to public health policy and the timing of interventions that aim to improve the adverse health outcomes mothers experience after the death of a child."

Espinosa's results, "Maternal bereavement: The heightened mortality of mothers after the death of a child," co-written by William Evans from the University of Notre Dame, were recently published in the journal Economics and Human Biology.

Espinosa has also conducted extensive research on spousal mortality in which his studies lead to the conclusion that men who are grieving from a wife's death experience a 30 percent increase in mortality. For women, there is no heightened mortality due to the death of a spouse, but there remains a correlation between the timing of the wife's and husband's deaths. Espinosa believes he understands why this happens, given the data are based on a sample of married people born between 1910 and 1930.

"When a wife dies, men are often unprepared. They have often lost their caregiver -- someone who cares for them physically and emotionally, and the loss directly impacts the husband's health," he says. "This same mechanism is likely weaker for most women when a husband dies. Therefore, the connection in mortalities for wives may be a reflection of how similar mates' lives become over time."

Espinosa, who earned his doctorate in economics from University of Maryland at College Park, is an expert in health economics -- the sub-discipline of economics that deals with the efficient allocation of health-care resources.?

Hotel official: Fidel Castro appears in public

HAVANA (AP) ? Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in months, a top hotel executive told The Associated Press on Sunday, challenging persistent rumors that the aging revolutionary is near death.

The 86-year-old leader dropped off a Venezuelan guest at the Hotel Nacional on Saturday afternoon, then stayed for about half an hour to chat with hotel staff, commercial director Yamila Fuster said.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," Fuster said. She said she was not present but that the news was being released officially by the state-owned establishment.

"They told me he looked very good. He was wearing a checked shirt and a hat," she said.

Fuster would not release the name of the Venezuelan guest, but witnesses at the hotel say former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua is staying there. A car with Venezuelan diplomatic plates was parked Sunday outside the hotel.

No photos have yet been released, but Fuster said they may be soon.

Asked to confirm the news, the Cuban government referred all questions to the hotel.

The Nacional is Cuba's most famous hotel and a common choice of many distinguished guests to the island.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation in recent days. He has not appeared on television or publically since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI.

Article Body:
Hello, and congratulations on becoming an Internet Entrepreneur with your very own Web Business!!! To get you fast-tracked, we have included a vast selection of tips and tricks to make your online business a success that it deserves to be.

1) First of all, choose a domain name that is somehow related to the business you are in. For?? example, if you are looking for a domain name for your pillow business, you might want to try using a name like?. It is important to use a "real" domain name. Your visitors will not take your business seriously if you use a free domain name like? . A lot of the good domain names are already spoken for, but if you are patient enough, you will search and find one that is still available. If you think that you will need more than one domain name, get that one now too, as thousands of names are taken up each day. Do a search under "Google" using "cheap domain names" as your search words. You will find some very reasonably priced domain registrars. They are a full service operation offering web hosting and cheap, cheap, cheap domain registration.

2) You will need a hosting service for your domain name. The hosting service allows your domain name and all of its content to be viewed on the internet. This is easy to handle. You have basically two choices here. You can pay for the hosting service or get it for free. If money is not really a problem for you, then you may want to choose the paid version. Just do a search using "Google" with "web hosting" as your search words, and take your pick from the thousands of sites. You will find that the price charged varies wildly depending the services required. Now if you want to explore the free version?. There are a lot of free hosting companies on the internet. The problem with these free hosting companies is that they all require some sort of pop-up banner, static header or footer banner, or both, to be placed on each and every web page. These banners can contain all kinds of advertising, and some, or all of it, may not be welcome to the viewers on your web site. The free hosting option is certainly not the best one to explore. To save you time, I would recommend again for the most economical hosting of your web site.

3) Once you have your domain name and hosting service taken care of, you will probably need a way of uploading your web content to your site. Sometimes your web hosting service provider includes a site manager that allows this function. If not, then you might want to look into downloading some FTP software such as WS_FTP for example .? While you are downloading software, you may also want to add WINZIP ? located at www.WinZip.com to your download list. WINZIP allows you to "unzip" your "PillowSleep" file for example. A file is initially "zipped" to compress it for ease of downloading. To use this download zip file, you will have to "unzip" it first.

4) Your "PillowSleep" site probably needs a little more customizing. Look at other pillow sites on the internet for comparison and see what could be improved visually on your site. Does it need any flashy graphics? There are many free graphics available on the internet? - just do a search with google. Once you are happy with the way your web site looks, it's now time to focus on that fun part ? html coding. Unless you are very comfortable using "html" coding, don't touch the "html" coding on the "PillowSleep" pages at all. If you are comfortable using "hml", then you could add things like Title, Meta Keywords, Meta Descriptions, etc., which would allow the search engines to find your web site much easier.? The use of "keyword phrases" is much more useful than just using "keywords", because it makes your web site more search specific. Go ahead and add a "Pillow" links page too. Another tip is always keep a hard copy of your web pages somewhere, either on a floppy, cd, or dvd. There are few things worse than customizing a web site and if something bad happens to your computer or hard drive, losing the web content forever.

5) At this point, you probably already have uploaded your web site and have it online. Now you need to "drive" visitors to your site. One popular way of bringing traffic to your site is to use a free link exchange or free link trading service. For the free link exchange service, you just sign up and put a little bit of code on your "Pillow" web site (this allows other Pillow web site banners to be viewed on your site and vice versa). The free link trading service is very simple also. You simply add another pillow's link to your links page and vice versa. This trading of links increases your sites popularity greatly with the search engines. One of the most important things you can do to gain traffic is to get listed with the major search engines. Go to each search engine, or use a free service like and add your web site there. There is also what is called "pay-per-click" search engines where you actually pay for traffic sent to your web site. Other search engines require payment in order to get listed with them at all. "Yahoo" is one of these "pay" search engines.

6) Please be advised that is illegal to "Spam" on the internet or via e-mail. Spamming is sending unwanted e-mails or putting internet advertising material, or internet material in general where it should not be. That being said, another method of marketing and promoting your site is to add your site to casino and gambling message boards and free for all links pages. Please check to see if it is ok to post your info there first, and in which category, and anywhere else before posting there. If you "Spam", you risk losing your internet service provider, and possibly your web host with all of your web content. It's just not worth the trouble.

7) Another way of promoting your site is to add your web site address to your business cards, and/or make up flyers and posters. Don't forget to get permission before you post anything anywhere. If you have other web sites, add a banner and/or link to your "Pillow" site there. Make a t-shirt with your "Pillow" graphic and web address on it (on both sides of the t-shirt) for yourself to wear. If you want, add your "Pillow" graphic logo and web address to different products like baseball caps and coffee mugs, and give them away as promotional items. Buy an ad on a bus stop, or a small classified ad in the local paper, or radio ad, etc. How about getting two of those "12 inch x 12 inch" sticky, bendable, removable, flat, "magnet ads" made up at your local printing store to put on the sides of your vehicle's doors. When you drive around the city, every body will see your web site ad and when you get to your destination, simply take the sign off until you leave again. How about putting one of your "Pillow" flyers or small posters on the inside of your vehicle's rear side glass areas. Just make sure it doesn't obscure your vision. The idea is to use your creativity here.

8) I hope these pointers are of good use to you. Good luck with your online web business!!!

Does Hemp Lotion Have Any Side Effects | Healhty Living

Various skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis may be treated with hemp lotion. It has become a popular lotion due to it?s anti-inflammatory attributes, which makes it a wonderful product to use for various skin ailments. This lotion is thus a softening and a healing lotion all in one.

[Self Tanning for Men, Tanning pills, taning bed tips]

Some people are very cautious when the first hear of hemp lotion. As the name may indicate, this cream is made from the same plant that delivers psycho-activity for those who smoke the flower part. This flower can only be found in female plants and is referred to by the general population as marijuana.

The seeds from which the oil is pressed, is not the same part of the plant that is used to smoke for its psychoactive effects. The oil is rich in omega oils and is the main ingredient in the lotions made to soften and treat skin. The oil has also been said even safe enough to consume and should help provide the body with these essential fatty acids.

Essential fatty acids consist of all the omega oils that are not naturally produced in the human body. Food and other supplements should be used to provide the body with these oils. Using essential oils on the skin may ensure healthy glowing skin that retain moisture better.

Lots of different topical products have been developed to help moisturize the skin. This is especially true for those who gets lots of sun exposure or for use during cold winter months, when the skin does not produce the same amount of natural oils. Sun and wind dries out the skin, and even supplements might be taken to help the skin retain its elasticity and youth.

One should always seek professional help where severe conditions are at play. Should someone experience adverse reactions when using any lotion or supplement, they should stop immediately and contact their doctor or a dermatologist. Latter mentioned have deep knowledge about human tissue and might be able to find a remedy or prescribe a product that will help alleviate the problem.

No additives or preservatives are added to these lotions and only natural ingredients are used. People with skin ailments should therefore not react negatively when using these products. The fatty acids used also makes it a products with regenerative properties and might help the skin stay firmer for longer.

In most countries, marijuana is illegal. It is only permitted for medical applications and is monitored when used as such. The oils, not having the same properties as the flower, is however not illegal and may be used freely.

As with any routine, regular application should deliver better results than those who only apply it once in a while. The creams are available for different applications. There are hand creams and also those fit for whole body use.

Many retailers, both general and on-line, sell these products. This might be due to the growing popularity. Some on-line market-places even give discounts, so one should shop around to see where the best price may be achieved. They should do this with caution and be aware of imitations that might be doing the round, when purchasing these.

You can find details about the reasons why you should use hemp lotion when tanning and a description of Sun Laboratories ultra dark self tanning lotion 8 oz on our website, now.

family entertaining | Fork+Canvas

Readers, I am SO sorry that I have been MIA recently. My parents are in town, and we see each other about twice, maybe three, times a year, and so we?ve spent much time catching up, going on long walks, and of course, eating some home cooking.

My parents? birthdays are both at the end of September, so I decided to celebrate their birthdays with a home-cooked meal earlier this week. As a family, we eat out a lot, so eating a meal at home is especially meaningful. When my brother and I were still at home, we ate a home-cooked family dinner almost every night, but since leaving the nest, these home-cooked dinners have happened with less and less frequency. My parents, like many, always appreciate their kids? homemade gift efforts, so making them a gourmet dinner really touched them. When I attended Calvary Womens Services annual Iron Chef, I tasted the winning recipe of salmon with a trio of apple dishes, and I decided that that dish would be my meal?s main attraction.

I commissioned Guy to create toothpick appetizers, and he cooked up some delicious Chinese gong bao ji ding, or really spicy chicken with carrots, peppers, peanuts, and chilies. Usually everything is cut into small pieces, but then it would have been extremely difficult to put the dish on a toothpick. Guy cut his pieces slightly larger, and the appetizer bites were spicy, tender, and flavorful. Despite my Chinese background, I cannot say that I am a good Chinese cook. Guy definitely is, even though he is Irish-American. My family devoured the gong bao ji ding!

For the main course, I whipped up an apple and fennel pur?e, potato and smoked salmon latkes, an apple salsa verde, and seared salmon with thyme. It was a complicated dish, and I was racing against the clock to serve dinner on time. Everything was well-received. (Sorry, I promised I wouldn?t share the recipes, but you can deduce from the pictures what might be in the dish.) Success for me, the learning chef! My favorite part were the latkes. Lox are great and so are potatoes. Hence, these latkes were a done deal.

I didn?t budget my time well, so I ended up running out of time and not making dessert. I was planning to bake lemon angel food cake cupcakes with a basil lemon syrup. My mother had brought back so many fresh lemons from her California backyard, and it would have been the ultimate nod of filial appreciation if I used those lemons! Ah, well, next time.

In any case, I am happy to say that my parents enjoyed their birthday dinner not in a glitzy restaurant but in the comfort of home with their family. We split a bottle of wine and chatted for hours. Is there a better way to celebrate my parents than enjoying their company?

Boxee TV streaming OTA settop box and DVR pics leak out

If you've been wondering "what will Boxee do next?" there appears to be an answer. A tipster has sent The Verge pics of a new set-top box, still built by D-Link, that ditches the original's angular design for a more conventional shape and integrates live TV tuning support as well as DVR capabilities. There's no word on the storage capabilities, but the box advertises an included antenna and remote (lightly refreshed, losing the QWERTY keyboard) and implores owners to "stop wasting money on stuff you don't watch." Boxee's healthy support for internet content, both streamed and locally stored, is still intact and a survey suggests support for viewing content on mobile devices. Not mentioned? Cloudee integration or any cable TV support, encrypted, ClearQAM or otherwise. There's a few more pics beyond the source link, we'll start updating our CES watchlist now.

How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet? | Fantastic Cleaners

carpet cleaning in London The first item in your house to show signs of neglect usually proves to be the carpet. Among its first signs are the dulling of colour as well matting. On high traffic areas you can see the path imprinted on the fabric as your steps have pressed the individual fibres together. Without timely cleaning the fate of your carpet will have been sealed and it would never look quite as good as you have bought it originally.

However, given the fact that most people don?t have the time to regularly have their carpets washed professionally, the most commonly asked question is: how often should you clean your carpet? The answer to this question is far more complicated and depends on your carpet, the season and its own position around the house.

1. Season

If you?ll only go according to season, then I will have to say that cleaning your carpet twice a year. I have a thing for spring cleaning, so an early spring carpet cleaning session after you have done with the general tidying up of your home will certainly improve the atmosphere in your home. On the other end of the time spectrum, you have the end of autumn, when you have to prepare for the cold days and nights. It?s good to start the winter season with a clean slate.

2. Carpet Type

Darker carpets will generally need one professional carpet cleaning in the year as they tend to keep their colours intact and actually, more frequent washing can cause for the colours to bleed out and ruin the carpet. With lighter carpets the situation is more or less in reverse. Dirt builds up and the original colours turn a sheen of grey. These carpets needs at least two professional sessions spaced in the year, though for white and beige, three visits from carpet cleaning in London ought to be in order.

3. Carpet Location

Carpets in the rooms with little to no daily interaction and traffic, the cleaning should be done at the very least once a year. These rooms are usually the bedrooms. Carpets located in living rooms, the kitchen and hallways as well as stairs deserve more attention as they generally suffer the most of the traffic and therefore will tend to absorb more ingrained dirt.

Take all these in consideration and create your own schedule.

Third Person Viewpoint and Free Indirect Style | Joanne Phillips ? a ...

This is the first in a series of posts about point of view. Inspired by my MA studies, I?d like to share with you all I know about this fascinating subject ? which is one many writers struggle with, but if used well can lift an ordinary story up into magnificence!

Part One ? Third Person Viewpoint and Free Indirect Style

Point of view in fiction is a thorny subject, and one that is often misunderstood. I recently read an article by Tahlia Newland, where she talks about ?head hopping? ? where point of view (POV) is not clearly defined, and isn?t used to best effect by the writer. If you?re unclear about basic third person POV, or want to know more about head hopping and why it?s considered bad form, have a read of Tahlia?s article.

I agree that POV needs to be used for maximum effect, and that switching between characters within the same paragraph isn?t the best way to control a reader?s experience of your story. It?s also one of my pet hates. On saying that, I recently read a book where the author did just this, but because she did it consistently, and because each character was so well-drawn and defined, it didn?t detract from my enjoyment at all.

What I want to focus on in this post is how to use third person viewpoint to draw the reader in to your fictional world completely ? to make them believe they are right inside a character?s mind, seeing the world through her eyes, experiencing events as they happen without anything getting in the way. And what could get in the way, you ask? Apart from the head hopping mentioned earlier, the other thing to watch out for is the intrusion of the narrator?s voice.

What do I mean by narrator?s voice? Well, look at it this way ? who is telling the story? You are, of course, but in the world of the story, who is telling it to the reader? If your book uses first person POV then it?s obvious ? it?s the character who is talking, telling his or her story directly to the reader. But if you use a third person viewpoint, then who is speaking, writing, relating the story on the page? Often the author is quite visible in fiction, with language and choice of phrase consistent with the writer, not necessarily the characters. A classic example is the vivid, writing-workshop-esque description of a landscape, not seen through a character?s eyes but placed into the story because the writer wants the reader to ?see? the setting. This is the omniscient viewpoint in action (more on this in future posts), and while often effective, it removes the reader from the action, rather than shoving her slap bang into the middle of it.

Now imagine seeing a landscape entirely through a character?s eyes. It?s a landscape where something is happening ? there?s a point to its description, it?s not just there to look pretty or show off the writer?s gift for metaphor. Our hero, Bettina, is arriving at university for the first time. It?s a historic building, and the omniscient viewpoint would describe the stunning architecture, the colour of the stone, the history of its construction.

And then there?s really good third person viewpoint:

?Bettina stood in the middle of the scavenging pack, searching for clues to where she should be right now. Freshers? Fair ? a free-for-all of pounding music, insistent voices, tiny carrier bags crammed with free gifts, and improbable societies touting for members. The walls of the quadrant closed in above her, tobacco yellow; stained, perhaps, with souls of students who had failed to thrive ? She joined a queue for who-knew-what, and waited, dazed. The stone path at her feet was littered with flyers; the arched entrance had disappeared completely. What would it be like to live here, day after day? The noise, the smell of hot, competitive need ? after the country it was anathema to her.?

There is nothing in this piece that Bettina doesn?t see or think. She?s an intelligent, well-read young woman, and what she notices is that which is interesting to her. (I couldn?t resist describing the colour of the stone!)

Notice something else about the passage above: The second to last sentence is an example of free indirect speech. ?What would it be like to live here, day after day?? There is no ?she wondered? after this, or ?Bettina thought?. Writing in this way puts the reader inside her thoughts ? who else, after all, could be asking this question? The narrator, perhaps. But the narrator is nearly invisible here ? it?s as if the reader is the one observing her. Now add the following statement to the end of that piece: ?Little did Bettina know that university was about to get much, much worse ??

Arghh ? I?m in physical pain right now. I can?t stand author intrusions like this*, and although many writers seem to think this is a good way of introducing tension ? a foretelling of traumas to come ? it isn?t. It?s a bad way, a lazy way, and it pulls the reader out of the story by her hair.

Before I finish, here is another explanation of free indirect speech:

Direct speech = ?Why is Tommy wearing that penguin outfit?? she asked.
Indirect speech = Why was Tommy wearing a penguin outfit, she wondered.
Free indirect speech = And why on earth was Tommy wearing a penguin outfit?

Next book you read, watch out for free indirect speech, or style, and notice the effect it has on you as a reader.

* The only time this kind of statement can work is if your story is narrated in first person POV, and your narrator is telling the story of what happened to Bettina. But then you have another set of problems ? how can the narrator know so much about what Bettina is thinking? As a reader you?d have doubt the truth of some of the narrator?s story, which brings us to the idea of the unreliable narrator ? a topic for another post!

DMoms: A Carpool Line with a View - The MOAT Blog by Kay Wyma

Mondays might be a tiny bit different around here. DMagazine?s DMoms and I are going to try out a little blogging relationship. Since you guys know my flakey/procrastinatey tendencies, let?s hope I can keep up with my end of the bargain to have a post for them every Monday. Linking what I do there, here ? sharing what?s going on in both spots will be a huge help to me.

Is that okay with you guys?? Let?s hope it works? then we can have even more moms walking the road with us. On this trip? the more is absolutely the merrier.

Thanks for walking it with me.

-Kay

carpool

I lean back from the driver?s seat and wave to my littlest guy getting out of the car for kindergarten.

Watching him, book bag balanced perfectly on his shoulder, walk to class by himself, I can?t help but notice the carpool group of kids running up behind him. Instantly, I?m catapulted to a few short years earlier. Memories of my oldest, now 15, flood my thoughts.

When my first child met the education circuit for the first time, I for sure lined up a carpool of kids to join the ride ? of ?cool? kids, no less. I wanted him to feel like he had friends. I didn?t want him to be left out or have to search for someone to talk to. His self-esteem was in play. And the players can be mean. Hurtful at times.

Not once did that boy walk into or out of school alone. In fact, when he hit middle school, I actually drove fifteen minutes out of the way to pick up one of his friends so he wouldn?t have to enter those big scary doors to face the ferocious middle-school crowd alone. Fifteen minutes might not sound like much, but add to the equation getting three other kids to different schools, and let?s just admit ? I?m a coddling fool.

What is it with a mom?s incessant need to smooth the road so our kids can be happy? The age gap between kindergarten Jack, my little surprise tag-a-long, and the rest of our brood affords me the opportunity to (more often than I would like) realize how silly I can be. The countless carpools I?ve arranged so a kid will be included. The art camps, music lessons, and language classes ? all so they will be ?well-rounded? or ?ahead? or ? I don?t know. Something great, I?m sure.

And then I hear them saying to each other in the back of the car (as if I can?t hear), ?Do you remember when we had she made us have ?swim refresher? lessons?!? followed by audible eye-rolls and a chorus of exaggerated ?yeah?s.

Okay, so yes I did make my crew hit the pool with stroke instruction lessons during one Christmas vacation. I didn?t want them to feel awkward walking into the mid-season of swim-team that I was forcing them all to join the next semester. Why might you ask did they all have to join the swim team? Because our oldest isn?t an athlete. He needed to get P.E. credit for school. The school said he could do an off-campus regime. Swim team fit our schedule and met the requirement. So I signed him up. And since I didn?t want him to have to go it alone (lest it be too stressful ? walking out to the pool by himself, kids you don?t know, lack of coordination, etc?), I forced his siblings to join the team for built in acceptance.

Pathetic. I know. And yet, I struggle to stop myself.

Until I watch Jack.

Last in line, he doesn?t get a finagley mother (She?s too busy smoothing everyone else?s road.) And, he?s just fine. Jack walks into school by himself. Finds his class by himself. Eats or doesn?t eat the lunch they give him ? himself. Rarely does he have a play date. (His friends are in our house and share the same his last name). He was the only boy in his preschool class of eight kids last year. He has never watched, listened to or played with educational material. According to societal convention, he should be washed up at this point.

But, guess what? He has survived. Dare I say thrived. He?s arguably the most well-adjusted of our entire bunch? including me.

I know that some of the best parenting comes in the form of:

  • letting your kids stand on their own two feet
  • encouraging them to forge uncharted territory on their own
  • walking behind and sometimes alongside rather than ahead
  • letting them fall

It?s just nice to watch validity in action via a well-adjusted, independent five-year-old.
