Jimmy Kimmel To Host Emmy Awards
It is official funny man Jimmy Kimmel has been named the host of the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, very good choice if you ask me. The Primetime Emmy Awards are one I look forward to all year mostly because it is all about TV, which as you are all well aware I am completely addicted to but also because there is always an interesting choice for host. This year is no exception as the host is none other than late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. The announcement was made earlier today. ABC will host the infamous awards on September 23rd so it makes sense that Kimmel, whose talk show in on the alphabet network, would host the show. Yes I know there could other choices I am just simply pointing out his show is on the network hosting the Emmy?s. Anyway back to the topic at hand. Susan G. Komen executives depart in turmoil over a funding flap of Planned Parenthood. At least five Susan G. Komen executives have left.
At least five high-ranking executives with the Susan G.?Komen?for the Cure breast cancer charity have resigned in the aftermath of the organization's decision to eliminate its funding for Planned Parenthood.
Skip to next paragraphThe departures include three officials from?Komen's?Dallas headquarters, as well as CEOs of affiliate groups in Oregon and New York City. The chairman of the foundation also stepped down from his post, though he will remain on the board. Although some cited personal reasons, the resignations suggest that?Komen?is still in turmoil, even after reversing course and restoring the money to Planned Parenthood.
Komen?spokeswoman Leslie Aun said she could not speak to individuals' reasons for leaving but acknowledged the effects of the controversy among supporters.
"Obviously, we know some folks are upset. We've certainly seen that," Aun said. "We know people have been upset by recent events, but most really do recognize the importance of our work."
The resignations began about a month ago. Chris McDonald, executive director and chief executive of the organization's Oregon and southwest Washington affiliate, announced that she'll leave at the end of April. She said her decision wasn't "predicated by any one event," but that actions by national headquarters affected her thinking.
"Despite our deep frustration about the distraction that our organization headquarters' actions caused, I was proud that our affiliate took a strong stand against the politicization of the fight to improve women's health," McDonald said in a Feb. 25 statement posted on the organization's website.
One board member for McDonald's affiliate, Portland attorney Jennifer Williamson, rejoined the board after stepping down last month to put pressure on the national organization. She couldn't walk away from the localKomen?work to expand access to women's health care, she said.
"As a local affiliate we could push back on them but we couldn't do anything about it," said Williamson, who is also on the Planned Parenthood board and is a Democratic candidate for the state Legislature. "I did what I had the ability to do, which was resign from the board. But to support the mission ... I rejoined the board."
News emerged in late January that?Komen?had decided to stop giving money to Planned Parenthood for breast-screening services because Planned Parenthood was the focus of a congressional investigation launched at the urging of anti-abortion activists. After a three-day firestorm of criticism,?Komen?decided to restore the money.
Some?Komen?affiliates, including McDonald's, were among those that publicly opposed the policy change that cut off grants for Planned Parenthood.
In the days after the reversal,?Komen?policy chief Karen Handel resigned. She had opposed abortion as a Republican candidate for Georgia governor and had become a target of those angry about the decision to halt funding to Planned Parenthood.
In Dallas, the three resignations were Katrina McGhee, executive vice president and chief marketing officer; Nancy Macgregor, vice president of global networks; and Joanna Newcomb, director of affiliate strategy and planning.
McGhee announced in February that she would be leaving May 4 "for personal reasons" and because it was "time to make a change."
McGregor will leave in June, and Newcomb departed at the end of February. The Associated Press left messages Thursday for McGhee and Macgregor. Newcomb declined to comment.
Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr. also will step down from his post as chairman of the foundation's board of directors as of March 31, but he will remain on the board, Aun said. His decision, which was finalized at a Thursday board meeting, comes as he is "stepping back a bit" from the board due to his responsibilities is his role as provost at Howard University, she said. Leffall did not immediately return messages from the AP.
Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron, CEO of?Komen's?New York City affiliate, said Tuesday that she will leave April 27. Her affiliate was also critical of the Planned Parenthood decision, but she did not cite that in a letter posted on the website, saying only that she wanted to pursue "new career opportunities" and that leaving "was not an easy decision."
Vern Calhoun, a spokesman for the New York affiliate, said Richardson-Heron was not speaking to reporters.

Penn. GOP Conference Apologizes For Band Singing About ?Fighting The Corruption Of The Jewish Banks?
Before a speech by GOP messaging guru Frank Luntz, a band called The Angry Mob Band played for the crowd. Pennsylvania political reporter Sy Snyder, reporting from the event, tweeted that a band at the conference sang the lyrics, ?We?re fighting the corruption of the Jewish banks but when the Jews come to feed us, we always say thanks.? Snyder added that the band was satirizing the Occupy movement, but that hardly seems to justify the lyrics.
Indeed, about 15 minutes later, the official Twitter account of the conference tweeted an apology (screen grab) to Democratic operatives who had retweeed Snyder:

More seniors using reverse mortgages

Finding themselves financially strapped, more seniors at an earlier age are trying to get reverse mortgages on their homes in order to survive, according to a new report.
The study says the percentage of people aged 62 to 64 applying for reverse mortgages has increased 15 percent since 1999.
The reason for the dramatic upswing among "younger" seniors is simple, the report concludes: They need the money.
"The average age for taking out reverse mortgages has been around 71,"? explains Sandy Timmerman, director of the MetLife Market Institute who conducted the survey with the National Council on Aging.
"But with job losses, higher debt and living costs, more and more of the 'younger' seniors are looking at reverse mortgages as a way to pay their bills and keep their homes," Timmerman adds. "It shows the devastation some seniors have gone through since the financial downturn."
Reverse mortgages ? which allow homeowners to borrow against the value of their homes ? have been around since the early 1960s, but have grown in popularity. TV commercials with celebrities such as Henry Winkler, Robert Wagner and Fred Thompson promoting reverse mortgages, are rampant during weekends and late night viewing hours.
?But whether it's the ads, the financial necessity, or both ? reverse mortgages have become attractive to more seniors. In 2010 alone, more than 80,000 Americans over 62 years old finalized a reverse mortgage. That's up from 25,000 in 1995.
?'It's not surprising that more seniors are doing this at an earlier age," says Karl Byrd, CFP, vice president at Security Ballew Wealth Management. "We live in a time when people are not planning for their retirement or can even get out of debt. Some seniors can't even buy groceries right now."
?The increase in the number of reserve mortgages may simply be due to the growing number of seniors, poor or not, says Gregg Smith, COO of the lending firm, One Reverse Mortgage.
"We've noticed the age range for reverse mortgages getting 'younger' for us," Smith says. "But when you figure that some 10,000 people a day reach 62 in the U.S., we're seeing this grow among all seniors and believe it will get even bigger in the next 10 years."
Another selling point for reverse mortgages is the gain of respectability.
"Those ads aside, reverse mortgages are getting rid of the bad reputation they've had in the past," says Mark Goldman, a real estate professor at San Diego State University and a real estate investor, who's handled reverse mortgages for some of his clients ? including his in-laws.
"The loans are backed by the government and more financial planners are looking at them as a viable option for their clients," Goldman goes on to say. "With mortgage rates low, and reverse loan fees dropping, they can make good sense."
How a reverse mortgage works is fairly simple. Designed for those 62 or older, a homeowner gets a lump sum or a payout for the equity in their house. The loan, with interest, does not have to be repaid until the last surviving homeowner moves out of the property or passes away.
There's no income or credit check and even if a senior is in foreclosure ? and as long as the house has equity ? they are eligible. All who apply must meet with an independent home loan counselor to discuss the ins and outs of getting a reverse mortgage.
Reverse mortgage loans are not taxable, and generally don?t affect Social Security?benefits. Most loans have adjustable rates and can be re-financed, while some have fixed rates.
But they do come with a price tag and tight restrictions. Previous loans have to be paid off. Closing costs can add up ? the average is about $2,000 to $3,000 depending on location. And there's no free ride when it comes to property taxes and mortgage insurance ? they have to be paid by the homeowners to keep the house.
Homeowners must use the house as their main residence, and if the homeowner dies or wants to sell, the proceeds must go to pay off the loan.
Another warning signal ? reverse loans can use up all or most of the equity and leave seniors with fewer assets as they grow older. And the loans are geared toward older seniors. The older someone is, the more credit is available. That's why most reverse mortgages have been taken out by people in their 70's. That is until now.
"Weaker economic conditions are pushing 'younger seniors' to go for any amount of money they can get at an earlier age," says Timmerman.
"The people we surveyed in the younger age range applying for the loans were clear about their needs for financial help," Timmerman says. "They didn't seem like they could wait."
At a time when more seniors in the U.S. are facing poverty?? some 15.9 percent are considered poor ? it's not surprising to see the move to reverse mortgages, says Mark Goldman.
"I saw a an older woman at the drugstore the other day, asking her pharmacist to please cut the costs of her medicine," Goldman adds. "When you see seniors facing rising health care costs, and as they lose jobs and see 401(k) returns shrink, it's going to be tough not to look at a reverse loan."

Due to the ADA, then, employees who suffered back injuries which would previously have gotten them a permanent disability, were now able to continue working due to the fact that their employers were now mandated by law to make accommodations to make their continued work possible.
Because the ADA no longer recognized many disabilities as permanent and complete disabilities, the long-accepted payment schedules no longer made sense.
In one of the most famous workers compensation cases, an employee at the Santa Fe railroad won more than a quarter million dollars as a settlement for permanent total disability under workers comp. His doctor had testified he would never be able to work again to to a back injury he acquired on the job. Less than a week and a half after the settlement, he filed a lawsuit under ADA because he said he was wrongfully terminated due to his disability which was covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The lawsuit was thrown out, of course, but this serves to illuminate the reader as to the massive changes that then had to be done.

Richard H. Serlin: The Unique Personal Finance/Investment Benefits ...
An interesting and important aspect of home solar panels is their unique investment and personal finance properties. In some ways they're a rare very low risk investment.
A cornerstone of finance is the risk-expected return tradeoff. The lower the risk of an investment, the lower an expected return it makes sense to settle for. And if the asset is negative risk (it lowers your current total risk), like insurance, then it can even make sense to accept a negative expected return. And people do that all the time when they buy fire insurance. A great example, too, though too few even economists seem to realize it, is global warming insurance.
With solar, you have an investment that can really lower a family's risk. And today's America is amazingly risky for most families (see Yale political scientist Jacob Hacker's book, The Great Risk Shift). A job loss can all too quickly and easily lead to ruin for a family, as unemployment insurance pays very little. A great defense is to have your house paid in full, and I usually advise a 15 year mortgage (when it does makes sense to buy), and even then, paying it off faster. But you still have utilities, property taxes, insurance, etc.
If you solar up your house, especially in a state like mine, Arizona, this means little or no utility bill, and eventually the panels may generate enough electricity to also mean no fuel bill (with electric cars). And even no property tax bill! Why? It's already common in Arizona to have backwards running meters to sell back excess power from solar panels (and it was offered in 43 other states in 2010), so the money you make from your home power plant can cover your property taxes. This, of course, depends on how many panels you have on your roof (and the rest of your property, solar gazebos!), what state you live in (not everyone lives in solar ground zero, Arizona), things like how southern facing your panels are, and the ever increasing efficiency of the panels.
Few people, even in Arizona, may generate the kind of power that covers your utilities, fuel, and property taxes today. But in 20 years, the power capturing ability of panels may double or quadruple (see, for example, here, here, and here). And if solar starts providing these kinds of financial benefits, believe me, you're going to see a whole lot more people moving to Arizona, Nevada, etc. (more on this below), and panels are going to be put in a lot more places than just the southern facing part of the roof, along with perhaps other solar power capturing devices like special windows and walls.
Elizabeth Warren has what I think is the best personal finance book available today, "All Your Worth". In it she really stresses -- above all else -- the importance of keeping your "Must-Haves" (fixed expenses) low to withstand today's risky world. Solar is a very nice addition in this respect. The panels are typically guaranteed for 25 years, and may last much longer. And there are potential advancements that can extend lifespan, maybe greatly (see, for example, here and here).
Of course, you could just take the money you were going to put into solar and put it into some other very safe asset, like TIPS, but:
(1) The TIPS market can be funny and maybe illiquid, with TIPS real returns recently going negative.
(2) If you have the money in solar panels instead, it may not be touchable in bankruptcy, or by creditors or litigants in general. Many states protect your home, including additions, (homestead exemption), up to a large, or unlimited, amount. It definitely adds to your family's badly needed security knowing that no matter how bad things get, you can never lose your home, or your free electricity, fuel, and maybe regular supplemental income from your panels. Creditors and litigants can take your TIPS, but in many states they can't take your home, or your panels.
(3) When applying for college financial aid, often your home equity, including solar panels, is not considered. But I can guarantee you a hunk of money in TIPS is (unless perhaps it's in an IRA or 401k, but the panels should be on top of maxing your IRA and 401k contribution limits). The same is true of some government assistance and other need-based programs.
(4) The solar return can be really good, way better than TIPS. From what I've heard, a 7 year payback, or less, is not that rare already in Arizona. (yes, I know very well after years in finance, that NPV is the ultimate, but payback period can help you estimate NPV, because all other things equal a shorter payback period means a less risky, less uncertain, project. So knowing the payback period helps you make a better decision on the discount rate to use.) The payback period depends a lot on the tax spiffs, and those can vary a lot by state. So interestingly, this study, found a shorter payback period in Massachusetts than Arizona.
(5) Solar Panels protect you against inflation too, and maybe a lot better than TIPS do. With TIPS, you get compensated for changes in the price of the CPI basket, but your purchases may be very different from the CPI basket. And if your family is in a financial crisis, you're not going to be purchasing much of the discretionary or luxury items that are in the basket, but electricity and fuel will be very important. A spike in their prices could really hurt you during a family financial crisis. It's very risk-decreasing knowing those things will always be free, or small, if you have to ride out a crisis.
In 20 years, if Obamacare survives for try-and-see to decimate the disinformation, it could be common for people to always have health insurance, power, and fuel for their cars that they can never lose, and maybe substantial supplemental income from selling solar power on top. This would certainly be a welcome huge step forward in families' security.
On a related note, I think in 20 years Arizona could really be hot -- in more ways than one. Advanced, powerful, and inexpensive panels (and other solar collecting devices like special windows and walls) could really make it relatively cheap to live there, with free utilities and fuel, and with selling the excess back to the grid free property taxes, homeowners insurance, and maybe more, the way the generation of these panels keeps increasing. I always tell my wife I want to turn our backyard into a solar plant! Gazebos with panels on top! She's not thrilled with the idea.

Syrian rebels lack guns, money after key defeats
BEIRUT (AP) ? Two significant defeats at the hands of Syrian government troops have exposed the limitations of the country's rebel forces: They are low on cash, running out of weapons and facing a fiercely loyal military that will fight to the death.
Insisting that their drive to oust President Bashar Assad by force remains strong, the Free Syrian Army says the arms shortage is the main obstacle.
"Send us money, we're desperate. Send us weapons," Ahmad Kassem, who coordinates military operations for the FSA, told The Associated Press in an interview. "We don't need fighters. We have excess men who can fight, but we need weapons to protect our land and honor."
In the past year, the rebels briefly seized small amounts of territory, most recently in the Baba Amr district of Homs and the city of Idlib in northern Syria.
After nearly four weeks of relentless shelling, the government reclaimed Baba Amr on March 1 following an assault that killed hundreds of people and transformed the neighborhood into a symbol of the uprising. The humanitarian situation in Baba Amr, part of the third-largest city in Syria, remains catastrophic for civilians.
Government forces next turned their guns on Idlib, another bastion of opposition support. On Tuesday, government forces took control of the city in a three-day operation ? significantly shorter but still bloody.
The Free Syrian Army has emerged as the most potent armed force fighting Assad. It is highly decentralized, with its leaders in the relative safety of neighboring countries. The rebels have not come close to carving out a zone akin to Benghazi in eastern Libya, the center of the successful uprising against Moammar Gadhafi last year.
"If we had a safe haven to operate out of inside Syria, we would've won the battle against Bashar a long time ago," said Muneef Al-Zaeem, an FSA spokesman based in Jordan.
The defeats have sapped some of the rebels' momentum, but the fighters say they are using the opportunity to regroup.
"We absolutely do not feel defeated, not at all," said Fayez Amru, a FSA member who defected from the military about a month ago and is now based in Turkey. But he lashed out at the international community, saying even the most blistering criticism of Assad will not help those facing down the regime's tanks. He appealed for weapons.
"I wonder about this international community, which has not offered the Syrian people a single gun," he said, bitterly. "People in the so-called free, civilized world should be ashamed of themselves."
An influx of weapons could transform the conflict. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been discussing military aid, but the U.S. and others have not advocated arming the rebels, in part out of fear it would create an even more bloody and prolonged battle.
Syria has a complex web of allegiances in the region that extend to Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, raising fears of wider violence.
Analysts see reason to be concerned, given that criminals could try to exploit burgeoning rebel force. Some observers already see trouble brewing.
"The recruits into this 'army' range from fathers defending their families to bereaved young men to defectors fighting for their lives, but its ranks are not devoid of fundamentalist militants and unreconstructed villains," according to a recent analysis of the Syrian conflict by the International Crisis Group. "To date, the latter elements have not been predominant, although they are all that the regime, its supporters and its allies want to see."
The regime says it is fighting foreign terrorists and armed gangs, asserting that the yearlong uprising is not a popular revolt. But the opposition denies that, saying Assad's opponents have been forced to take up arms after the government used tanks, snipers and machine guns to crush peaceful protesters.
In recent months, interviews with more than a dozen FSA members indicate that the group's weapons come from Iraq and Lebanon, as well as from army defectors who kept their weapons when they abandoned their posts.
One FSA fighter, who is based in Turkey, said it was easiest to smuggle in arms from Iraq, but the quality of the weapons was bad.
"Our RPGs are Russian-made and mostly come in from Iraq, but four out of five rounds are a dud," he said, asking that his name not be published out of fear for his safety.
He also said costs were skyrocketing. An AK-47 assault rifle is anywhere between $1,000 and $1,500, he said.
Syrian army officers also have sold weapons to the rebels in some cases, trying to turn a profit, according to several people, including Mohammed Qaddah, a Free Syrian Army official who helps draw up military plans for the rebels.
Without a steady arms supply, he said, the rebels will rely on the well-worn tactics of insurgencies the world over.
"We use Molotov cocktails, homemade grenades and roadside ambushes," he said.
Qaddah said there are thousands of rebels willing to fight in a suburb of the capital, Damascus ? an allegation that is impossible to confirm ? but there are only 750 machine guns.
"They take turns using them," Qaddah said.
As the rebels struggle to get weapons, Damascus has a steady supply from Russia.
Earlier this week, Russia said it will abide by existing contracts to deliver weapons to Syria despite Assad's crackdown. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov defended that stance Wednesday, saying Moscow is providing Syria with arms to fend off external threats.
Assad considers the uprising to be a foreign plot to destroy the country.
"We are selling weapons to Syria for its national defense, national security," Lavrov told lawmakers in the Russian parliament. "We aren't providing Syria with any weapons that could be used against protesters, against peaceful citizens, helping fuel the conflict. We aren't doing that. We are only helping Syria to protect its security against external threats."
Russia, a key Syrian ally since Soviet times, has been the main supplier of arms for the Syrian military, which has relied almost exclusively on Soviet and Russian-made weapons, from assault rifles to tanks to aircraft and missiles.
So far, the FSA does not pose a real threat to the Syrian army, a highly professional and ironclad military.
But Al-Zaeem, the FSA spokesman in Jordan, vowed to keep up the fight.
"We're planning ambushes, which will be painful for Bashar's army and its allies," he said. "We promise Bashar it will be painful. He will see."

3D printer produces cathedral at record speed
You might say this car is small and fast. The same words would apply to the machine that manufactured it ? a 3D printer, developed at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria, that can print nanometer-scale objects at record speed for the technique it uses.?
The new device prints layers of a liquid resin, developed at the Vienna University of Technology, that hardens to a solid when it's hit with two photons from the printer's laser beam. Continuously-moving mirrors focus the beam to the right place as the printer works. The results have a resolution of hundreds of nanometers, which means each of the sculptures the printer makes is about the size of a grain of sand.?
The printer is the fastest yet that uses this technique, called two-photon lithography, the Vienna researchers said. "The printing speed used to be measured in millimeters per second ? our device can do five meters [more than 16 feet] in one second," J?gen Stampfl, a materials scientist at the university, said in a statement.?
The advantage of having such a precise printer is that it can make structures that are small enough to work with individual cells, according to the university. They could print scaffolding to grow cells, parts for biotech devices or parts for nanotechnology.?
