Paint doped with a bacterial toxin that attacks barnacles only when the creatures infiltrate the paint could keep other marine life from being collateral damage in the fight to keep hulls smooth. Cynthia Graber reports

It?s boating season. Which means it?ll soon be time for that annoying ritual?the scraping of the barnacles. They latch on tight and don?t let go.
Barnacles can be a major pain: as they grow they build up calcium deposits under a boat?s paint. And their interference with smooth fluid flow can decrease fuel efficiency by up to 40 percent, a major problem for large vessels.
Currently, hull paint can be doped with poison, usually based on copper oxide, that leaches out slowly to kill the little critters. But the poison also escapes into the water and can kill other marine life.
Now, researchers might have a better option: a paint additive that kills just the barnacles, using their own behavior against them. It?s a toxin based on a molecule created by a bacterium. The researchers developed a method of embedding that toxin into the paint so that it only gets released when the barnacle penetrates the paint. The info was published in a university thesis. The scientists determined that the toxin works in low concentrations and could be effective for years. Which could lower the cost of paying the barnacle bill.

Yet more rumors about yet more hires for rumored iWatch
Piling onto recent iWatch is yet another story about Apple hiring yet more people to work on the fabled product. This time, however, the rumors are as generic as they are nebulous, and come our way via Chris Nuttall of the Financial Times:
The company has begun hiring ?aggressively? for the project in recent weeks, say people familiar with Apple?s plans for the wearable device, a move that shows it has stepped up development but which raises questions over the ability of its own engineers to develop wearable technology.
The bit at the end seems completely off. Apple's biggest problem remains retention of existing talent and attraction of new talent, neither of which is getting any easier, not for any project current or future, ongoing or planned. This year especially, post re-organization, already tight resources are stretched beyond thin. What with iOS 7, OS X Mavericks and all the new hardware coming this fall powered by both, there's an exhausting amount of work to be done. Add another, new device category to it, and the hiring better be "aggressive". And "brilliant'.
You can raise questions over the abilities of Apple's own engineers to find time to sleep, but that's about it.
And:
The timing of the hiring spree implied the iWatch would not be ready for launch until the latter part of next year, said people familiar with Apple?s thinking, a blow to some investors who have been eager to see evidence that Apple?s innovators still have the ability to create or redefine new product categories.
The bit at the end here is no better. I'm sure unrealistic investors who have no idea of the history or business of Apple are expecting magical new product categories every day and half, but anyone with any sense knows that years if not decades pass between Apple re-revolutionizing things. Mac, iPod, iPhone (and iPad). These were not month after month, or even year after year occurrences.
Very few companies successful launch more than one such product. Apple's done it several times over. They may well do it again with an iWatch (or whatever it ends up being called). And "investors" and those who "write" about them can expect it when they see it.

Online course will let students give money away
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? A free online course that starts Monday will offer students the chance to learn about giving from Warren Buffett and help decide how to spend more than $100,000 of his sister's money.
More than 4,000 people have already signed up for the course that will also feature philanthropic advice from baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. and the founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner and journalist Soledad O'Brien are other featured guests. The amount being given away could grow if more students sign up.
Buffett and his older sister, Doris Buffett, will be featured in the first class to talk about their motivation for philanthropy. Warren Buffett is gradually giving away all of his $58 billion Berkshire Hathaway stock while Doris Buffett has already given more than $150 million away en route to her goal of redistributing all her wealth before she dies.
"The trick is not to have her give it away faster than I make it," Warren Buffett joked because his family's wealth is tied to the Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate he runs.
Each one of the big-name givers will be featured in videos at the end of each of the six class sessions discussing an aspect of philanthropy.
But everyone involved with the course agrees that the fact students get a chance to give away real money may be more important than the famous speakers because it makes the lessons more powerful.
"It's an experience that gives profound insight into deciding how we meet the needs of our society," said Rebecca Riccio, the Northeastern University professor who will teach the course.
The Giving With Purpose online course is modeled after a class that has been taught at more than 30 universities that allows students to give away $10,000 after evaluating several nonprofits and learning about effective giving. This online offering allowed Doris Buffett's Sunshine Lady foundation to expand the classes without adding staff to manage the program.
"Giving With Purpose allows us to extend the classroom walls to include any individual passionate about philanthropy," Doris Buffett said in a statement. "There are thousands of people with the energy and ideas to make a difference."
Riccio said the course will focus on individual decision-making in giving and will teach strategies students can use to make sure their donations are effective.
"I'm trying to teach people about giving with their heart and their head," Riccio said.
Charitable gifts should be relevant to whatever people are passionate about, Riccio said. But this class will teach people how to judge what kind of impact a nonprofit makes and how well-run the charity is based on how much it spends on administration.
Allyson Goldhagen said she hopes many more people sign up for the class because she found the university version of the course so valuable, and she's looking forward to helping teach the online course.
Taking Riccio's class at Northeastern shaped the way Goldhagen thinks about nonprofits and helped her land her current job at the Associated Grant Makers, where she helps charities in the Boston area become more efficient.
Goldhagen said the course can help people realize how important their gifts are to nonprofits, even if they are modest. That's why she talked both of her parents into taking the course.
"I really hope that they start to think differently about the world and their impact on it," Goldhagen said.
Doris Buffett's grandson, Alex Buffett Rozek, organized the online course, and he said he hopes this will be the first of many times it is offered.
In addition to what students learn in the course about effective giving, the nonprofits involved are also learning because usually the classes focus on smaller local charities. As students review organizations that might receive grant money, the charities learn about the process of winning grants.
"These grants are huge to the organizations that receive them," Rozek said. "And because they went through the process, they do understand how to fill out a grant application and get funding."

Aliens poked NBA star's nose (at least that's what he says)

Please, don't just take my word for it (though anyone who's taken that drive should know what strange occurrences might await).
Instead, hark at NBA star Baron Davis, who seems to have little doubt that beings from out there invaded his space down here, as he journeyed back from the City of Sin to the City of Spin.
In a pulsating interview with "The Champs" podcast (warning: he uses naughty words here), the former Golden State Warrior (currently teamless) insists that one minute he was driving and the next he was "in this, like, steel thing."
There were "crazy-looking people, half-human, half, like [imagine aforementioned naughty words here]."
He claims they were poking him on his nose and looking him in the eyes.
To some, this might seem entirely like the usual form of defense enacted by Metta World Peace.
Still, Davis insists they then tied his hands.
More Technically Incorrect
But just when he must have imagined that he would soon be on the Planet Zarp playing point guard for the Capital City Zarpshooters, he regained an earthly consciousness and discovered he was in Montebello, Calif., still without an NBA team.
He claims he was shaking and, given that it was 4 a.m., his only recourse was to find sustenance -- yes, at an In-N-Out Burger.
This all allegedly occurred a mere two weeks ago.
Some might imagine that Davis was imagining things. He has been known to be involved in the movie business.
He concedes right at the end of the interview that it might have been the Illuminati.
But he claims that, after this experience, he is now mentally sharper. He claims he is retaining more information.
Of course, it's frustrating that he's unable to retain information about what these beings looked like or whether they spoke at all.
Davis should subject himself immediately to hypnosis and examination by the government's finest scientists.
The future of the world (and of alien movies) might depend on it.
