Futurity.org ? Test quickly diagnoses infections in pets

U. MISSOURI (US) ? A simple blood test that may diagnose pet infections in approximately a third of the current time could lead to a similar test for humans.

?Infections can be difficult to diagnose, and many veterinarians have to send samples to a lab and wait three days or more as the lab attempts to grow a culture,? says Amy DeClue, assistant professor of veterinary internal medicine at the University of Missouri.

?Meanwhile, the infection continues to spread each day that veterinarians wait on lab results, which is detrimental to the patient. In extreme infections, called sepsis, more than half of patients die.

?My group has been evaluating different blood biomarkers that could give a quick and accurate indication of infection, and we believe we?ve found a biomarker that will only require a simple blood test.?

In a ?study published in the journal Veterinary Record, DeClue and colleagues report that measuring the amount of the blood biomarker N-terminal portion of pro C-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pCNP) is a good indication of infection. The same is true in humans.

Working with collaborators at Veterinary Diagnostics Institute, DeClue hopes to develop a portable bedside test that veterinarians could use to quickly test patients for infection and ultimately target a better cure.

?In animal and human medicine, one goal is to reduce the amount of antibiotics used in treatment, to reduce bacterial resistance to antibiotics,? DeClue says. ?If successful, future tests could help veterinarians tailor treatment to the specific problem and reduce antibiotic use.

?The systems in dogs and people are very applicable to each other, so whatever biomarkers we find in dogs could also benefit people.?

NYTimes offers discounts in mistaken email gaffe

(AP) ? In today's digital age, it's easy to send out an email by mistake ? even for a company that's in the business of communication.

The New York Times thought it was sending an email to a few hundred people who had recently canceled subscriptions, offering them a 50 percent discount for 16 weeks to lure them back.

Instead, the offer went to 8.6 million email addresses of people who had given them to the Times.

That was the first mistake. The second came when the Times tweeted that it didn't send the email. But the Times had.

Many people called in, and the newspaper initially honored the discount. The newspaper says it stopped giving out discounts to people who received the email in error by early afternoon.

NBA fans tune in to basketball's return with big television ratings for Christmas games

NEW YORK - NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday attracted large audiences, with the Bulls-Lakers matchup drawing the third-highest preliminary rating for a regular-season game on ABC. The 6.5 overnight rating trailed only a 7.3 for last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and a 7.9 for another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.3 overnight, up 77 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast. It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game.

The earlier night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.9 overnight, up 36 percent from to last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 5.6 overnight, up 6 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

The Celtics-Knicks game on TNT to open the day drew a 4.1 overnight. The early game on ESPN last year, Bulls-Knicks, had a 2.7 on ESPN.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

NBA ? Norris Cole trascina Miami, bene Hawks e Blazers

CELTICS 107, HEAT 115

Male Evans ( 4 pts, 3 asts, 5 TO).

JAZZ 71, LAKERS 96

Program Helps Women With Post-Cancer Fatigue - Health News ...

POSTED: 11:54 am EST December 26, 2011
UPDATED: 1:53 pm EST December 26, 2011

One of the big complaints of cancer patients who have gone through surgery and chemo is that, even a couple years after the fact, there is overwhelming fatigue and not being able to feel like their old selves. As WBAL?s Donna Hamilton reported in Monday?s Woman?s Doctor, there is a program to help women with that. It?s called Be Well, Stay Healthy. Lisa Horton, a 55-year-old pediatrician, went through a mastectomy, chemo and breast reconstruction in late 2007 and early 2008. She couldn?t shake the fatigue.?It was beginning to affect how much work I could get done,? Horton said. ?It was affecting my social life, and I couldn't understand why I was still tired.? Mercy Medical Center Dr. Kath Helzlsouer said that?s a common complaint after cancer. A pilot study was done on ways to get energy back, and it reduced fatigue by almost 40 percent. ?It was quite an impact,? Helzlsouer said. ?It was better than any other intervention we have out there, including depression and mood too. It was quite an impact.?The program deals with the mind-body connection and includes teaching exercise ideas, group support, diet and taking time for one?s self.?People know what they need to do, it?s how do you go about doing it,? Helzlsouer said. ?So exercise is an important thing to do to reduce fatigue. And it's also important for weight control, and weight is a problem a lot of women have, especially with chemotherapy.?The program struck a chord with Horton, who said she previously shied away from the camera.?I lost 70 pounds. I exercise three to five days a week,? she said. ?If I miss it, I feel it. I'm not obsessed with exercise. It's just a part of what I do.?She called what has happened a metamorphosis and said she feels healthier than she did at 26 years old.The Be Well, Stay Healthy program is free and is recommended for cancer patients after they?ve completed treatment.Anyone can attend, not just patients at Mercy, Hamilton said.

Idaho teen loses cancer fight after delivering son (AP)

POCATELLO, Idaho ? Jenni Lake gave birth to a baby boy the month before her 18th birthday, though she was not destined to become just another teenage mother.

That much, she knew.

While being admitted to the hospital, she pulled her nurse down to her at bed level and whispered into her ear. The nurse would later repeat the girl's words to comfort her family, as their worst fears were realized a day after Jenni's baby was born.

"She told the nurse, `I'm done, I did what I was supposed to. My baby is going to get here safe,'" said Diana Phillips, Jenni's mother.

In photographs, the baby's ruddy cheeks and healthy weight offer a stark contrast to the frail girl who gave birth to him. She holds the newborn tightly, kissing the top of his head. Jenni, at 5 feet and 4 inches tall, weighed only 108 pounds at the full term of her pregnancy.

A day after the Nov. 9 birth, Phillips learned that her daughter's decision to forgo treatment for tumors on her brain and spine so she could carry the baby would have fatal repercussions. The cancer had marked too much territory. Nothing could be done, Phillips said.

It was only 12 days past the birth ? half spent in the hospital and the other half at home ? before Jenni was gone.

Even so, her family and friends insist her legacy is not one centered in tragedy, but rather in sacrifice.

This month, her family gathered at their ranch style home in Pocatello, where a Christmas tree in the living room was adorned with ornaments picked out just for Jenni, including one in bright lime green, her favorite color. She had passed away in a bedroom down the hall.

Recalling Jenni's infectious laugh and a rebellious streak, her mother held the baby close, nuzzling his head, and said, "I want him to know everything about her, and what she did."

___

The migraines started last year, when Jenni was a 16-year-old sophomore at Pocatello High School. She was taken to the family doctor, and an MRI scan found a small mass measuring about two centimeters wide on the right side of her brain.

She was sent to a hospital in Salt Lake City, some 150 miles south of Pocatello, and another scan there showed the mass was bigger than previously thought.

Jenni had a biopsy Oct. 15, 2010, and five days later was diagnosed with stage three astrocytoma, a type of brain tumor. With three tumors on her brain and three on her spine, Jenni was told her case was rare because the cancer had spread from her brain to another part of her body with no symptoms.

Her parents, who are divorced, remember they were brought into a room at the hospital and sat down at a long table as doctors discussed her chances of survival.

"Jenni just flat out asked them if she was going to die," said her father, Mike Lake, 43, a truck driver who lives in Rexburg, north of Pocatello.

The answer wasn't good. With treatment, the teen was told she had a 30 percent chance to make it two years, Lake said. While he was heartbroken, Lake marveled at how strong she seemed in that moment. "She didn't break down and cry or anything," he said.

But her mom recalled Jenni did have a weak moment that day.

"When they told her that she might not be able to have kids, she got upset," said Phillips, 39.

Jenni started aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, while also posting videos on a YouTube site titled "Jenni's Journey," where she hoped to share her story with updates every other day. She managed to upload only three videos, though, as her treatments left her tired and weak.

On her second video, posted Nov. 20, 2010, Jenni appears distraught while a family friend records her having lunch with her mom.

"Last night, like, I was just lying in bed and I was thinking about everything that was going on and it just like, it just hit me, like everything, and I don't know, it made me cry," Jenni says on the video.

Her mom is shown burying her face in her hands. "Do you know how hard it is to be a mom and know that she's sick and there's nothing you can do," she says, before collapsing into tears.

Jenni persists: "It's hard. It's like, I don't know how long this is going to last and I just want it to go away ... I feel like this is holding me back from so much ..."

By March of this year, the tumors had started to shrink, the family said.

In a picture taken at her prom in early May, Jenni is wearing a dark blue strapless dress and gives the camera a small smile. There's a silver headband in her hair, which is less than an inch long. Chemotherapy took her shoulder-length blond tresses.

Her boyfriend, Nathan Wittman, wearing a black dress shirt and pants, is cradling her from behind.

___

Jenni started dating Nathan a couple of weeks before she received her diagnosis. Their adolescent relationship withstood the very adult test posed by cancer, the treatments that left her barely able to walk from her living room to her bedroom, and the gossip at school.

"The rumors started flying around, like Nathan was only with her because she had cancer," said Jenni's older sister, Ashlee Lake, 20, who tried to squelch the mean-spirited chatter even as the young couple ignored it.

They were hopeful, and dreamed of someday opening a restaurant or a gallery.

Jenni had been working as an apprentice in a local tattoo shop. "She was like our little sister," said the owner, Kass Chacon. But in May, Jenni's visits to the shop grew less frequent.

She had been throwing up a lot and had sharp stomach pains. She went to the emergency room early one morning with her boyfriend and when she returned home, her family members woke up to the sound of crying. "We could hear Jenni just bawling in her room," said her sister, Kaisee, 19.

She had learned that she was pregnant, and an ultrasound would show the fetus was 10 weeks old.

Jenni's journey was no longer her own.

From the start of treatment, she was told that she might never have children, her mother said, that the radiation and chemotherapy could essentially make her sterile.

"We were told that she couldn't get pregnant, so we didn't worry about it," said Nathan, 19.

Jenni, the third of her parents' eight children, had always wanted to be a mom. She had already determined to keep the baby when she went to see her oncologist, Dr. David Ririe, in Pocatello two days after she found out she was pregnant.

"He told us that if she's pregnant, she can't continue the treatments," Phillips said. "So she would either have to terminate the pregnancy and continue the treatments, or stop the treatments, knowing that it could continue to grow again."

Dr. Ririe would not discuss Jenni's care, citing privacy laws, but said, generally, in cases in which a cancer patient is pregnant, oncologists will consider both the risks and benefits of continuing with treatment, such as chemotherapy.

"There are times during pregnancy in some situations, breast cancer being the classic example, where the benefits of chemotherapy may outweigh the risk to mother and baby," Ririe said. "There are other times where the risk outweighs the benefits."

There was no discussion about which path Jenni would choose. Her parents didn't think of it as a clear life or death decision, and Jenni may not have, either. They believed that since the tumors had already started to shrink earlier, she had a strong chance of carrying the baby and then returning to treatment after he was born.

"I guess we were just hoping that after she had the baby, she could go back on the chemotherapy and get better," her mother said.

___

Jenni and Nathan named the baby Chad Michael, after their dads. Nathan has legal custody of the child, who is primarily cared for by Nathan's mother, Alexia Wittman, 51.

"Nathan will raise him," she said. She brings the baby to Jenni's house to visit her family whenever they ask.

Jenni didn't show regret for her decision, not in the final weeks of her pregnancy as she grew weaker, and not when she started to lose her vision as the cancer took its course, her family said.

Jenni's last words were about her son as he was placed beside her a final time, her father said. As she felt for the baby, she said: "I can kind of see him."

Mass rally in Moscow raises pressure on Putin (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of flag-waving and chanting protesters called on Saturday for a disputed parliamentary election to be rerun, increasing pressure on Vladimir Putin as he seeks a new term as Russian president.

The protesters chanted "Russia without Putin" and "New elections, New elections" as speakers called for an end to Putin's 12-year domination of the country at the second big opposition rally in two weeks in central Moscow.

"Do you want Putin to return to the presidency?" novelist Boris Akunin asked from a large stage.

Whistling and jeering, protesters chanted: No!"

Police said at least 28,000 attended the rally on Prospekt Sakharova (Sakharov Avenue), named after Soviet-era dissident Andrei Sakharov. One opposition leader put the crowd size at up to 100,000 people.

The big turnout is likely to encourage organizers to believe they can keep up the momentum of the biggest opposition demonstrations since Putin rose to power 12 years ago, although the prime minister seems intent on riding out the protests.

Tens of thousands of people protested in Moscow on December 10 and many more demonstrated across the world's largest country the same day to complain against alleged vote-rigging in the December 4 election won by Putin's United Russia party.

The protesters were heartened by the Kremlin's human rights council saying a new election should be held, although it is only an advisory body whose recommendations are regularly ignored by Russia's leaders.

Many of the protesters wore white ribbons, the symbol of the protests, and others carried balloons and flags at the rally, which brought together liberals, nationalists, anarchists, environmentalists and urban youth on a bitterly cold day.

"The last protest made a huge impression and I want others to come and realize they can stand up for their right. We all know the election result and we all know how dishonest they were," said Andrei Chernyshov, a 22-year-old student.

PROTESTERS DISMISS CONCESSIONS

President Dmitry Medvedev, who is stepping aside next year to let Putin take his place after four years as prime minister, has promised electoral reforms to relax the Kremlin's grip on power, including restoring the election of regional governors.

But the opposition has rejected these conciliatory efforts and says Putin and Medvedev have ignored its key demand for a rerun of the parliamentary poll, which handed a slim majority to the ruling United Russia party.

The protesters say United Russia benefited from widespread voting irregularities and international monitors said the vote was slanted in the ruling party's favor.

"The party of swindlers and thieves are the only ones who benefit from the preservation of the status quo," journalist Leonid Parfyonov said on a video message shown on a screen.

Protesters held signs saying: "For Russia without Putin."

Dozens of police trucks lined the capital's main ring road nearby and the police blocked off roads around the protest site, but they did not intervene.

Putin is still expected to win the presidential election in March and return to the post he held from 2000 until 2008 but there are growing doubts that he will win outright in the first round of voting. The opposition is largely divided and has no candidate to unite it in the March presidential poll.

The former KGB spy's popularity has declined since he and Medvedev announced plans in September to swap jobs next year, a decision which many Russians said showed a disregard for democracy.

Putin, 59, has suggested that many of those taking part in the protests have been paid to turn out and accused the United States of encouraging the protests. Many people, who answered calls to protests on social networking sites, say this underlined that he is out of touch.

When trying to pay off credit card debt, some of the ignored options many people have are government grants. Obama campaign, DNC return Corzine contributions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee have returned more than $70,000 in contributions from former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine following the collapse of MF Global, Corzine's financial firm, officials said Friday.

Obama's campaign and the DNC returned contributions of $35,800 from Corzine and his wife, Sharon Elghanayan, said Democratic officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. They were not authorized to speak publicly.

Corzine was among Obama's top fundraisers, raising at least $500,000 for Obama's re-election campaign since April, according to records released by the campaign. The former Goldman Sachs chief held a fundraiser for the president last April and was considered a main Obama emissary to Wall Street.

One of the Democratic officials said the campaign and DNC would evaluate whether to return donations from other MF Global employees on a case-by-case basis.

A spokesman for Corzine declined to comment.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31 after a disastrous bet on European debt sparked fear among investors and trading partners. It was the eighth-largest U.S. bankruptcy and the largest on Wall Street since the 2008 collapse of Lehman Bros.

About $1.2 billion was found to be missing from client accounts when the securities firm failed, with much of the missing money belonging to farmers, ranchers and other business owners who used MF Global to reduce their risks from fluctuating prices of commodities such as corn and wheat. The FBI and federal regulators are investigating MF Global.

Corzine, who also is a former U.S. senator, told congressional panels earlier this month that he didn't know any customer money was missing until the day before MF Global collapsed.

Bloomberg News was first to report the returned campaign contributions.

Facebook Study: Why people friend and unfriend each other (Yahoo! News)

"Offensive comments" top the list of reasons for unfriending

Still hurting over being unfriended on?Facebook? If?William Shatner can't make you feel better, maybe knowing the reason why you got the boot can give you peace of mind. A recent?study by NM Incite reveals the most common reasons why users friend (and unfriend) people on the?social network, and it could help you pinpoint where you went wrong along the way.

Receiving offensive comments and not knowing much about the other person are the top two motives for removing others on Facebook, followed by sales talk and depressing comments. And, even if people with thousands of friends make us wonder if they go on friend adding sprees sometimes, personal acquaintanceship is still the top reason why users add each other on the site. Knowing someone through mutual friends or through a business network comes next on the list.

The study also reveals that men and women generally have different activities on the site, with women using Facebook more as a creative outlet, a source of?coupons and promos, and a way to give products or services positive feedback. Men, on the other hand, use the social network to connect with business contacts, to find a job, or to find a?new romantic interest.

Why were you unfriended?

iPad 2 Rival Alert : RIM Blackberry PlayBook Tablet Down To ?169

Currys appears to be clearing out the RIM Blackberry PlayBook tablet as it has lowered the price of the device to ?169, a far cry from the US suggested retail price of $199, but by far the lowest price for a tablet with this configuration.

Given that the PlayBook went on sale back in May 2011 for ?400, this has to be the best tablet deal on the market since the epic HP TouchPad deal that landed in August when the price of the latter dropped to ?89.

At ?169, the tablet may be cheaper than the Amazon Kindle Fire. It comes with a dual core TI OMAP4430 clocked at 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a 7-inch 1024x600 pixels capacitive touchscreen, HD front and rear cameras, Wi-Fi, microUSB, microHDMI and Blackberry Tablet OS. An update to the QNX-based OS will come in 2012 and will bring both Blackberry Messenger and a slew of other sought-after features.

The online retailer is also giving away a free ?50 voucher when you purchase the tablet; the voucher will be sent by email between the 20th and the 24th of February 2012 to be redeemed between the 1st and the 14th of March 2012 on a minimum of ?200.

Ron Paul to Launch Third Party White House Bid?

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is doing well in the polls these days, but it's talk of potential third-party bid that really worries the GOP establishment.

In a campaign stop in Plaistow, N.H., the first primary state (the Iowa caucuses are Jan. 3, followed by New Hampshire's election 10), the topic came up again.

The Texas Congressman was asked if a third party run for the presidency would lead to easy re-election for President Barack Obama, and if he'd consider it.

"You'll have to ask the other candidates if they're interested," Paul said.

Paul's libertarian views, devoted followers and strong fundraising all fuel talk that if he fails to win the GOP nomination, he could mount an independent run next fall.

He denies interest in any such thing, but won't rule it out altogether. Paul also fielded the same question on Hannity after last week's GOP debate. Check it out:

German businesses, consumers upbeat despite crisis (AP)

BERLIN ? German business and consumer confidence ended 2011 on a high note despite ongoing fears about the European economy, two closely watched surveys showed Tuesday.

The Ifo Institute's monthly index of business confidence increased to 107.2 points from 106.6, as participants' assessment of their current situation remained unchanged but expectations for the next six months rose.

"Overall, latest Ifo data give ground for optimism that the German economy will weather the ongoing negative influence from eurozone debt crisis developments and the general worsening of prospects for external demand from the rest of Europe fairly well," said Timo Klein, an economist with IHS Global Insight.

Economists had been predicting a drop to 106 amid weakness in the global economy and serious concerns about the financial future of several eurozone countries.

"The German economy seems to be successfully countering the downturn in Western Europe," said Ifo president Hans-Werner Sinn. "This bodes well for Christmas."

Consumer confidence also proved resilient, according to the GfK research institute's forward-looking indicator for January. It remained unchanged from December's 5.6 points as people were optimistic "despite rising economic risks and further escalation of the debt crisis."

There were mixed messages from the survey, however, as German income and economic expectations both rose but consumers' willingness to buy dropped significantly, GfK said.

"Willingness to buy did not benefit from the improvement in economic and income expectations..." Gfk said, noting that it still remained at a "comparatively high level."

GfK said its survey of 2,000 consumers was almost complete before the most recent EU summit in Brussels and that it is unclear whether the inclination to hold back on purchases may now be resolved with the broad agreement reached there.

But it also said that while economic expectations are "defying the rising fears of recession," that might change as the debt crisis hurts German exports.

"With most German companies operating at above average capacity, the labor market is very robust and unemployment figures continue to fall," GfK said. "Whether this trend can be sustained remains to be seen ? the European debt crisis is increasingly likely to become a problem for Germany's export economy."

Dutch consumer confidence, by contrast, fell sharply in December to below the deepest lows of 2008 and 2009, according to a new report Tuesday.

The differing outlook is unusual, given the two economies' close trade links and common view on economic policy, as the Dutch government has consistently backed German policies throughout the crisis.

The country's Central Bureau for Statistics pointed to worries over the Dutch housing market, wage stagnation, and forecasts for a mild recession in the Netherlands in 2012 as key differences.

Ifo, which surveyed approximately 7,000 German businesses, said that their assessment of their current situation remained unchanged for the third month in a row, while expectations for the next six months ticked up for the third month in a row.

Earlier this month, Ifo lowered its forecast for German growth for 2012 to 0.4 percent because of the financial turmoil and a cooling global economy.

The government's independent economic advisers last month predicted that output would expand by 0.9 percent in 2012. Both forecast growth of 3 percent this year.

Another German think tank, the IfW institute, on Tuesday lowered its 2012 growth projection from 0.8 percent to 0.5 percent, while Essen's RWI institute lowered its forecast from 1 percent to 0.6 percent.

Carsten Brzeski, an economist with ING Global Research said that while it is clear that the German economy is cooling, the Ifo results indicate it is "heading towards a soft patch but not falling off the cliff."

"The length of the soft patch will to a large extent be determined by the management of the debt crisis," he said. "The German economy should remain the stronghold of the Eurozone. It is faltering, but not falling."

Cox Communications to sell spectrum to Verizon | HamptonRoads ...

Cox Communications Inc. has agreed to sell the wireless spectrum it acquired when it planned to build its own mobile phone network to the sister company of one of its chief rivals.

Verizon Wireless, a division of Verizon Communications Inc., plans to buy Cox?s 20-megahertz wireless spectrum licenses for $315 million. Cox?s licensed spectrum area covers a population of 28 million.

Verizon Communications offers landline telephone, high-speed Internet and FiOS TV video service in direct competition with Cox in Hampton Roads and other areas where Cox operates.

Cox got into the wireless business in late 2010 to add the one area of service in which it wasn?t competing with Verizon. It initially announced plans to construct its own wireless network. A month ago, the cable provider announced that it was discontinuing its wireless service.

The spectrum sale includes an agreement between Cox and Verizon Wireless to sell each other?s products and services. That allows Cox to continue to offer customers a wireless option ? and complete a full ?bundle? of telecommunications services.

In the future, Cox could carry Verizon Wireless devices and set up service plans at its own store locations, and Verizon Wireless would similarly sell Cox?s equipment and service plans at its stores, said Todd Smith, a Cox spokesman at its headquarters in Atlanta.

He added that Cox would not sell the phone, Internet or TV services of Verizon?s parent company.

The Federal Communications Commission must approve the deal. The agreement with Verizon Wireless excludes Cox?s 700-megahertz spectrum licenses and Cox Wireless customer accounts.

(AP Photo/Cliff Owen)

(AP) ? Lawyers representing the young Army intelligence specialist accused of leaking U.S. military and diplomatic secrets are arguing his personal struggles with being a gay soldier influenced his actions as a military hearing that could lead to his court martial enters its third day.

Pfc. Bradley Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items to the anti-secrecy online group WikiLeaks, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men.

Prosecutors at the pretrial hearing are expected to call more witnesses Sunday as they build their case to connect Manning to the publication of the material by WikiLeaks. The hearing is being held at a post outside Washington to determine whether Manning will be court-martialed on 22 counts, including aiding the enemy. Manning, who turned 24 on Saturday, could face a term of life in prison as a traitor.

The Obama administration says the released information has threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America's relations with other governments. Manning's lawyers counter that much of the information that was classified by the Pentagon posed no risk.

But among the first issues to arise on Saturday was whether Manning's sexual orientation is relevant to the case against him. His attorneys maintained that his status as a homosexual in the military before the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

The defense revealed that Manning had written to one of his supervisors in Baghdad before his arrest, saying he was suffering from gender-identity disorder. He included a picture of himself dressed as a woman and talked about how it was affecting his ability to do his job and even think clearly.

Maj. Matthew Kemkes, one of Manning's lawyers, asked Special Agent Toni Graham, an Army criminal investigator, whether she had talked to people who believed Manning was gay or found evidence among his belongings relating to gender-identity disorder. The condition often is described as a mental diagnosis in which people believe they were born the wrong sex.

Graham said such questions were irrelevant to the investigation.

"We already knew before we arrived that Pfc. Manning was a homosexual," Graham said.

Prosecutors objected several times to the questions. Kemkes responded that if the government can argue that Manning intended to leak secrets, "what is going on in my client's mind is very important."

During cross-examination of Treasury Department Special Agent Troy Bettencourt, who investigated the case, defense attorney Capt. Paul Bouchard asked if he believed Manning's military leaders failed him, given his behavior such as overturning a table and throwing a chair in episodes of rage.

Bettencourt said that in hindsight, "I would like to think that had I been in the chain of command, I would have maybe done things differently. I would have been aware of everything we now know to prevent him from deploying ? but that is with the benefit of hindsight."

Prosecutor Capt. Joe Morrow quickly asked Bettencourt if he believes people who have signed nondisclosure agreements, like Manning, "have an individual responsibility to safeguard classified information." Bettencourt replied, "Yes."

One of Manning's commanders in Baghdad, Capt. Steven Lim, said Manning should have had his security clearance suspended because of his problems. Lim said the outbursts occurred before he arrived, and that when he learned of them after Manning's arrest, he was shocked. Lim said he was also unaware that Manning believed he was suffering from gender-identity disorder.

Manning's appearances over the last two days in the Fort Meade courtroom marked the first time he has been seen in public after 19 months in detention. The Oklahoma native comes to court in Army camouflage fatigues and wearing dark-rimmed glasses. Manning sat calmly in the courtroom Saturday without appearing to react to the testimony, even when centered on his troubled mental state and homosexuality. Manning listened intently and regularly took notes.

The case has spawned an international support network of people who believe the U.S. government has gone too far in seeking to punish Manning.

San Francisco Salvation Army Bell Ringer Breaks World Record

On Friday night, a local man broke the world record for bell ringing when he spent more than thirty-six hours ringing a Salvation Army bell in Union Square for charity.

Twenty-four Salvation Army bell ringers across the nation competed to break the previous record, and at the end of thirty-six hours at midnight on Saturday, fifteen of them -- including Marcelino "Butch" Soriano in Union Square -- were still standing.

"It's going well. My feet are starting to be tired," Soriano told the San Francisco Chronicle.

As of noon on Saturday, forty-eight hours after starting, Soriano was still competing to set the new record along with six other bell-ringers, according to the Associated Press. Under the contest rules, competitors must stand the entire time. They receive ten-minute bathroom breaks every four hours, but are not allowed to eat.

The competition aims to bring awareness to the Salvation Army and its charitable goals.

Japan declares tsunami-crippled nuke plant stable

(AP) ? Japan's prime minister has announced that the tsunami-devastated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant has reached a "cold shutdown" and is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's announcement Friday marks a milestone nine months after the March 11 tsunami sent three reactors at the plant into meltdowns in the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

But experts noted that the plant remains vulnerable to more problems and will take decades to decommission the plant.

The crisis displaced some 100,000 people. Officials are to start discussing allowing some residents to return to less contaminated areas. A 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the plant is expected to remain mostly off-limits for years.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's government was to declare Friday that the tsunami-devastated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant had finally achieved a "cold shutdown," meaning it has stabilized and is no longer leaking substantial amounts of radiation.

The announcement would mark a big milestone nine months after the March 11 tsunami touched off a crisis at the plant and sent three of its reactors into meltdowns. Experts noted, however, that the facility remains vulnerable to more problems and will take decades of difficult and dangerous work to safely close down.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda was to announce the government's assessment of conditions at the plant in a news conference later Friday.

The government's official endorsement of the claim by Tokyo Electric Power Co. that the reactors have reached cold shutdown status is a necessary step toward revising evacuation zones around the plant and focusing efforts from simply stabilizing the facility to actually starting the arduous process of shutting it down.

But the assessment has some important caveats.

The announcement is expected to say Fukushima has reached cold shutdown "conditions"? a less definitive phrasing reflecting the fact that TEPCO cannot measure temperatures of melted fuel in the damaged reactors in the same way as with normally functioning ones. So the government also attached additional conditions to be met, including minimizing radiation leaks around the plant and taking backup safety measures to ensure Fukushima's wrecked reactors are safely cooled.

Even so, the announcement would mark the end of the second phase of the government's lengthy roadmap to completely decommission the plant, which is expected to take 30 years or more.

Officials can now start discussing whether to allow some evacuated residents who lived in areas with lesser damage from the plant to return home ? although a 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the plant is expected to remain off limits for years to come.

Some 100,000 people were displaced by the crisis.

A cold shutdown normally means a nuclear reactor's coolant system is at atmospheric pressure and the its reactor core is at a temperature below 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius), making it impossible for a chain reaction to take place.

According to TEPCO, temperature gauges inside the Fukushima reactors show the pressure vessel is at around 70 C (158 F). The government also says the amount of radiation now being released around the plant is at or below 1 millisievert per year ? equivalent to the annual legal exposure limit for ordinary citizens before the crisis began.

Howard Stern pledges to stir up "America's Got Talent" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Controversial radio host Howard Stern, who was named on Thursday as a new judge on family TV show "America's Got Talent", said he would give honest opinions and warned "feelings are going to be hurt."

Stern, 57, will replace departing talk show host Piers Morgan on the panel when the talent show returns for a 7th season in the summer of 2012, broadcaster NBC said.

The shock jock, known for his sexually explicit interviews and foul language, will continue to host his daily radio program for SiriusXM and production of the television show will move to New York to accommodate Stern's radio schedule.

The naming of Stern drew sharp criticism from some groups and fans of the show. It was deemed "an act of desperation for a flailing network," by the Parents Television Council.

PTC president Tim Winter called Stern "a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity" who was not suitable for a prime-time network TV show watched by families.

Winter said NBC, which has languished for several years at the bottom of the four main U.S. TV networks, "risks losing millions in advertising dollars", suggesting the PTC would urge its members to pressure advertisers to pull their commercials.

A writer named slawson on People magazine's comment board posted: "AGT use to be my absolute favorite show. With Stern (YUCK!!!), I know I will no longer watch it. Wow...What was the network thinking. Taking a clean, fun, innocent show to have a "wannabe" porn king judging. Wow, just wow, seriously."

However, NBC reality programming chief Paul Telegdy said Stern's "larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to 'America's Got Talent'."

Stern, whose raunchy humor and comments on religion and race have often landed him in hot water, will join judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel on the show which features performers ranging in age from children to seniors.

He told his radio listeners on Thursday that he would pull no punches with the young contestants, and their mothers.

"I am going to tell you your kiddie has no talent...this nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less than talented people has got to stop. Under my administration, there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning," he said.

"I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but feelings are going to be hurt," Stern added.

"America's Got Talent," created by British entrepreneur Simon Cowell, is one of NBC's most successful shows and the outspoken Stern had been Cowell's top choice to join the judging panel.

The radio show host lobbied hard but unsuccessfully last year for a judge's spot on "American Idol".

Stern's new salary was not revealed but Forbes.com writer Jeff Bercovici estimated that he could get about $15 million and that NBC could spend some $10 million to move the show to New York.

Stern said that he was not joining "America's Got Talent" for the money. "I didn't do it for the money. I did it because I like the show and I need to be a judge. That's it," he said.

(AP) ? A small comet survived what astronomers figured would be a sure death when it danced uncomfortably close to the broiling sun.

Comet Lovejoy, which was only discovered a couple of weeks ago, was supposed to melt Thursday night when it came close to where temperatures hit several million degrees. Astronomers had tracked 2,000 other sun-grazing comets make the same suicidal trip. None had ever survived.

But astronomers watching live with NASA telescopes first saw the sun's corona wiggle as Lovejoy went close to the sun. They were then shocked when a bright spot emerged on the sun's other side. Lovejoy lived.

"I was delighted when I saw it go into the sun and I was astounded when I saw something re-emerge," said U.S. Navy solar researcher Karl Battams.

Lovejoy didn't exactly come out of its hellish adventure unscathed. Only 10 percent of the comet ? which was probably millions of tons ? survived the encounter, said W. Dean Pesnell, project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which tracked Lovejoy's death-defying plunge.

And the comet lost something pretty important: its tail.

"It looks like the tail broke off and is stuck" in the sun's magnetic field, Pesnell said.

Comets circle the sun and sometimes get too close. Lovejoy came within 75,000 miles (121,000 kilometers) of the sun's surface, Battams said. For a small object often described as a dirty snowball comprised of ice and dust, that brush with the sun should have been fatal.

Astronomers say it probably didn't melt completely because the comet was larger than they thought.

The frozen comet was evaporating as it made the trip toward the sun, "just like you're sweating on a hot day," Pesnell said.

"It's like an ice cube going by a barbecue grill," he said.

Pesnell said the comet, although only discovered at the end of November by an Australian observer, probably is related to a comet that came by Earth on the way to the sun in 1106.

As Comet Lovejoy makes its big circle through the solar system, it will be another 800 or 900 years before it nears the sun again, astronomers say.
